The sun works the Amik plain from early, and the wheat runs flat to the mountains under it. Among the wheat sage holds its rows, a cooler green in all that gold. The captured heat swells the oil in the leaf, thickening it through summer.

The cut comes in the middle of July, the summer still arriving in the leaf, and the binding and drying follow it. Almost brittle, but surprisingly lithe.

The first smoke rises pale and straight. As it spreads, the air sharpens the way it does in the minutes before rain reaches you, when the light goes silver and everything stands a little more distinct. The smoke thins to a quickened air, like the moment the rain ends.

You feel it before you can name it. A stone chapel, a slope of warm herbs in the early sun, and only then the thing itself: green resin, dry herb, a coolness trailing beneath. Already the breath deepens, the chest filling as though a window had opened and the morning were coming in.

    Something clears behind the eyes.
